Mesothelioma is a rare type of cancer in which malignant cells are found in the sac lining the chest or abdomen. Exposure to airborne asbestos particles increases one's risk of developing malignant mesothelioma.
People who have been exposed to asbestos in a household environment, often without knowing it, while most have worked on jobs where they breathed asbestos. Mesothelioma is a disease in which cancer cells are found in the sac lining the chest, the lining of the abdominal cavity or the lining around the heart. Exposure can result in Mesothelioma 30 or 40 years later because of the long latency period of asbestos disease.
Researchers with the largest phase III trial to date for mesothelioma, an aggressive cancer affecting the lining of the lung, reported results showing that patients on a new chemotherapy drug regimen live longer and have less pain than those on an older drug. The findings were announced at the annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology meeting in Orlando, Florida
"This is the largest clinical trial ever conducted in this disease and the 25 to 30 percent improvement in survival for patients on the combination therapy is the first time anyone has documented a significant improvement in patients treated for mesothelioma."
